It’s impossible to ignore Antonio Rudiger’s role in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Roma last night.

Seemingly struggling in the left centre-back slot, the German international continually stepped up into midfield at the wrong time and inexplicably let the ball roll beyond him for Roma’s second goal – straight into the path of Stephan El Shaarawy.

Overall, the summer signing – who Transfermarkt value at £22.5million – has endured a mixed start to his Chelsea career. In some respects imperious, but in others already proving to be somewhat of a liability.

Which begs the question of why Chelsea invested so heavily in the former Roma defender during the summer, when they already had a young and talented centre-half at their disposal in Kurt Zouma.

The two-cap France international hasn’t exactly set the world alight at Stoke City just yet but he produced a Man of the Match display against Watford last weekend and while Rudiger is taking time to settle, Zouma’s already well-acclimatised to life in west London.

So, Chelsea fans, who do you think is the better defender? Let us know by voting below…
